YMR Show and Cruise
Lowes Motor Speedway, Food Lion AutoFair
Charlotte, NC- Sept 17-18, 2004

It seemed that North Carolina was a fitting place to visit again this year with the YMR Carolinas members being fairly active. We decided to attend the well known FoodLion Autofair held twice a year at the Lowes Motor Speedway. It allows car clubs of all makes and models a free entry into this huge event. Each club is limited to a certain number of spots and YMR members had to reserve ahead of time to guarantee a place in this show.

Little did we know that Mother Nature had something bigger planned for that weekend...Hurricane Ivan! As the weekend approached, Hurricane Ivan hit the Gulf Coast as a category 4 storm and wreaked havoc in a path headed straight for the Carolinas. Even with the threat of heavy rain and gusty winds, members drove from Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, and more to attend this special YMR shindig.

Hurrican Ivan satellite Photo The turnout was 29 cars out of a reserved 40 spots even though massive flooding and destruction was going on all around us. We outnumbered nearly every other club's attendance at the Autofair. This truly proved that nothing can stop a bunch of Yellow Mustang owners from having a great time together.

Friday was our first ever YMR Dyno-Day, at Custom Performance in Concord NC. Dan DeSio from Pro-Dyno was there with his portable Dynojet trailer. As the hurricane swirled overhead, Custom Performance graciously let us use their spacious facilities to hang out, play some pool, stay dry, and have our BBQ cookout that night. 11 members participated in dyno testing their Mustangs with several others coming just to be a part of the festivites. Dale Sciranko, owner of Custom Performance, went out of his way to ensure we were well taken care of.

Once the rain and wind subsided in the evening, a few select members decided it was time for a burnout competition (with the shop's approval). Mike Haas and Steve Roth brought their extra set of radial tires for just this occasion. As you can see from the photos, tire smoke was plentiful and the crowd loved it! It's tough to justify a burnout contest in print, so we have the actual video footage for you to watch! We'll let the videos speak for themselves. They are well worth the time to download even if you're on dial-up access.

Our show on Saturday had perfect weather despite all the forecasts of rain. We all cruised to the speedway in the morning from the hotel on a scenic path that avoided stoplights as much as possible. Luckily we lost no one and we were able to arrive and park at the speedway location as planned. The Autofair contributed 8 trophies that we gave out that evening for various judged classes solely within our club. The "Best of Show" award went to Tim Bollinger from Florida and his unbelieveably clean '03 GT Convertible.

We plan to do the Autofair once again in the Fall of 2005. Stay tuned for the information details to be released in May 2005, so you can make sure you get on this limited attendance list.
