50resto.com has just about everything you need to restore or modify your 79-93 Mustang, and has done a great job expanding that interest to 94-04 Mustangs as well. Since our primary goal with this car was to get it back to factory original condition, we were not looking to upgrade any parts. The car was already bone stock, but just needed a few final touches. We placed our initial order for the following:
- #LRS-20708A Door to Body Weatherstrip (19.95)
- #LRS-04371 Radio Delete Panel (19.95)
- #LRS-30618PR Convertible Outer Qrtr Glass Weatherstrip (29.95)
- #LRS-04786 Ashtray Door ($24.95)
- #LRS-06072B Glovebox Latch (16.95)
DOOR TO BODY WEATHERSTRIP:
Our door sills were suffering from "lazy feet" and the bottom edge of the weatherstripping was torn and missing. It's a fairly simple replacement. Simply remove the lower plastic scuff plate, and remove the 2 screws holding the edge of the rear inside panel. Remove the kick plate at the front, and take down the "A" Pillar plastic cover. In removing the "A" Pillar cover, the metal bracket where the convertible top latches to the car is best removed as well. Be aware of how it's mounted since it can be difficult to get it back on straight. From here, we were able to pull off the old weatherstrip and toss it out. Starting with a fresh rubber strip, start at the rear where the previous piece began, and simply lay it over the metal crease, pushing down as you go. Once you've worked over to the top edge of the convertible latch, cut off the excess rubber. (There's metal in it, so use tin snips if you have them.) You'll need to carefully cut the piece to fit at the top, and you may need to use a sealant/adhesive to secure it in place. Once it's laid out, you can re-install all of the covers you took off.
RADIO DELETE PANEL:
Our car came with an aftermarket CD player in another radio mounting panel. We bought the Radio Delete Panel from 50resto because it has a lower cubby hole for extra storage. We wanted to mount a new Clarion CD head unit to replace the worn JVC model that came with the car. To do this, we had to cut the new panel out to make room for the head unit. It is truly a Radio Delete Panel that was used for the Cobra R model, but we made it work for our purpose as well. You have to be very careful with this, or you'll break the plastic. So we drilled a large hole near one of the edges, and used a thin hacksaw blade to cut out the rest. Using a file, we fine-tuned the shape to accept our Clarion unit. It worked like a charm, and the new radio panel not only looks better, but also became more functional!
QUARTER GLASS WEATHERSTRIP:
Due to exposure to the elements, the outer quarter glass belt weatherstripping can become cracked or faded. Only one of ours is cracking, and at the time of this writing, we have not yet replaced these pieces. They are fastened with rivots, and tough to get to. We will be updating this page in the future to document our progress.
GLOVEBOX LATCH:
When we bought the car, the glovebox wouldn't even open. The latch mechanism was broken so we ordered a replacement. We had to remove the entire glovebox to open it, which was only a few screws along the lower edge. With the glovebox out on a table, it was much easier to work on. A piece of the plastic mechanism was broken, and a spring missing, so we turned to our new latch from 50resto. The handle they supply comes in grey which has to be painted to match the car. Since our black glovebox handle was in perfect condition, we wanted to reuse just the handle. We disassembled the new latch carefully, to remove the grey handle. The parts are small and delicate so this is best done with patience. Once we replaced the handle with our old black one, it was a matter of putting on the 2 screws and testing it out. The new latch does not include the lock mechanism, so you will need to take it off the old latch and slide it back into the new latch. We re-installed the glovebox to the dash, and you can't even tell it was ever broken.
ASHTRAY DOOR:
A common problem with 87-93 Mustangs, is a broken ashtray door in the console. Ford didn't build this section "Ford Tough" and it easily breaks under the ashtray at the spring holders. We originally thought the ashtray door's plastic bracket was broken, but upon further inspection, is only missing a spring (Part# LRS-30728). Check yours out first before ordering from 50resto.
CONCLUSION:
Regular maintenance of your car is critical to keep it in top shape. If something breaks, or becomes worn out, it's best to fix it in a timely manner. We still have a few other pieces of our 93 LX that we plan to update, and 50resto.com will be our first stop to check for those items. Their website is completely categorized and includes pictures of most of the items they sell. If you need something for your 79-94 Mustang, be sure to check out their website or order a catalog.
